As southerly winds surge water inland, Monday’s high tide has resulted in heavy flooding along the coasts of New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, Long Island, Connecticut, and Rhode Island.

And with another high tide expected to flood towns along southern Long Island, New York Harbor, the Jersey shore, the Delmarva Peninsula, and southern New England, it is important to ensure that you are your pet are safe.

Make sure to review these preparation tips to help guarantee your pet’s safety during the storm.

But most importantly, do not leave your pets alone. As the ASPCA puts it, “If you’re not safe, neither is your pet.”

The American Veterinary Medical Foundation recommends that pet guardians who evacuate bring their pets and have the following:

  • A leash, collar or harness for each pet.
  • A collapsible cage that includes bedding and guardian identification.
  • A cat litter pan and scoop.
  • Food, water, medications and feeding bowls.
  • Veterinary records.
  • A first aid kit.
  • A can opener.
